What I've Learned So Far:

Considering July's "Feast and Fast" challenge, I did a deeper dive into the competitive eating scene and found out that

Competitive Eating Isn’t Really About Hunger

In one fascinating study

Researchers invited college students to compete in a 30-minute chicken wing eating contest. Some competed privately. Others competed in front of a cheering crowd.

The results were unexpected.

Simply turning lunch into a competition caused participants to eat about four times more chicken wings than a control group who were just eating lunch.

But here’s the bigger point.

When a crowd was cheering them on, men ate even more, an average of over 30 wings. Women did the opposite. They actually ate less when people were watching. During interviews afterward, many women said they felt “self-conscious” or “embarrassed,” while men described the experience as “challenging,” “cool,” and “a rush.”

The researchers believe this comes down to social psychology more than biology. For many men, eating huge amounts of food can become a way of signaling toughness, competitiveness, or masculinity. In other words, they weren’t eating because they were hungry. They were performing.

It made me wonder how often all of us eat for reasons that have nothing to do with hunger.

We eat because everyone else is ordering dessert.

We finish our plate because we don’t want to waste food. (and of course, Africa)

We snack because it’s halftime.

We celebrate with food. We grieve with food. We socialize with food.

Our stomach is only one voice at the table.

Our environment is often louder.

The lesson wasn’t that competitive eating is good or bad.

It was a reminder that if we want to change our eating habits, we shouldn’t just ask, “Am I hungry?”

We should also ask, “Who, or what, is influencing this decision?”

*One caveat worth mentioning: this study was small (only 20 participants in the eating experiment), so the findings should be viewed as exploratory rather than definitive. Even so, it offers an interesting perspective on how social situations can shape our eating behavior among males and females.

Charity Challenge Updates:

This month (July):

  • This year the "Feast and Fast" was kicked off with a food-eating contest, brought to you by El Toro, Parkland
  • We were able to help contribute to the host of the event, the R.I.S.E center in Hilltop as the charity partner
  • We crowned Haldo as the "King of the Taco." He finished 5 large chicken tacos in about 4 minutes, damn. He then went on to eat 10,000 calories that day and do a 48-hour fast after. Epic stuff lad

Check the footage here

With your entry ticket support ($280) we were able to donate $140 to the R.I.S.E centers "Jericho" project, which aims to build a tiny home community for the homeless in Tacoma

I was able to then complete the SILVER division challenge of eating 5,000 calories in a day and then fasting for 24 hours (made it 34 hours actually).

I tried to eat ~6,700 calories of cereal alone, but I tapped out at 4 boxes (~5,200 cals) lol. WILD. My pancreas prolly is still upset.

Congrats to Raquel and Haldo for their victories.

Next month (August):

There are no charity challenge events in August, but coming up in September there is my annual "Remember, Remember, the Stairs of September" event.

If you don't remember it from last year

If you show up to Bear Crawl Events you can earn these bad boys

(or bad bears rather) ;)

What is Bear Crawl Clubs purpose?

America is Broken.

Not beyond repair, but cracked where it matters most.

We’re politically polarized, physically unfit, and angry at anyone but ourselves.

We’ve lost the muscles that made us: grit, grace, unity, humility.

So let’s rebuild it.
Not with opinions.
With actions.

Introducing: TriumFit’s Moonshot Challenge

“The Fall Bear Crawl Across America”

3,000 athletes.
3,000 miles.
$300,000 raised for charity.
One mile at a time.

In October the goal will be to get every day athletes to register to commit to Bear Crawling 1 mile in 1 day, and raising $100 for GiveDirectly.org

It will be a completely VIRTUAL challenge, no location limitations.

One day it would be cool to actually pass a baton or something across the United States, but not yet.

We start on all fours — bear crawling across a divided country to prove something simple: We don’t need to agree on everything to move in the same direction.

Because strength isn’t found in shouting louder.
It’s found in those who bear their weight and keep moving forward.
